If your connection is Fibre to the Premise (FTTP), your ability to use your nbn™ service to make or receive calls in a power failure, including calls to an emergency service number, depends on whether a battery backup power supply is installed with the nbn™ equipment.
This battery is covered by a 12-month nbn™ warranty.
If a battery backup unit is not supplied, you will not be able to make or receive calls during a power failure, including calls to an emergency service number.
When it’s time to replace the battery, you will see a red light appear next to the ‘Replace Battery’ marker on the nbn™ connection box. You’ll also hear an alarm tone, which will beep every 15 minutes to indicate your battery needs replacing. Four beeps per minute means there’s less than half of the battery charge remaining.
The Battery Back-Up Power Supply Unit is not available for Fixed Wireless, VoIP, Satellite, FTTN or HFC connections.
Please Note: The Battery Back-Up Power Supply Unit will not power customer equipment (Handsets, Modems etc). You will need to ensure you have your own power supply for these devices.
A standard corded telephone can be plugged directly into the nbn™ NTD Unit to establish a temporary phone connection.
What do I do with the old batteries?
Once used, sealed lead acid batteries are classified as hazardous waste. By throwing them in the bin at home, your old battery heads straight for landfill where if damaged, it could contaminate the soil by leaking acid, lead and other nasty pollutants into the ground water.
Instead of throwing your used battery into the garbage, why not take it to a recycling facility to be appropriately disposed of? These facilities include specialist battery recyclers, selected battery relaters or local council drop-off centres.
Where can I buy a new battery?
Many specialist battery retailers stock a compatible battery for the nbn™ Power Supply Unit, complete with a battery back-up service. Some battery suppliers may also visit your home and fit the new battery for a fee. These retailers are denoted in the "in-home battery replacement" column. Their fees vary and are not set by NBN, so ask the retailer for more details. Also check with the retailer what the warranty period is on their product.
